Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and powerlifting in Canada is under fire after a transgender athlete set records at an international competition.
Riley Gaines, an advocate for women’s sports ever since she was forced to compete against trans swimmer Lia Thomas, called out Trudeau for his policies after Anne Andres dominated the other lifters at the Canadian Powerlifting Union’s 2023 Western Canadian Championship in Brandon, Man., on Sunday.
Andres, 40, competed in the Female Masters Unequipped category and set a Canadian women’s record and an unofficial women’s world record by lifting 210 kg more than second-place finisher SuJan Gill.
Andres’ total weight lifted in squat, bench and deadlift was 597.5 kilograms while Gills finished at 387.5 kilograms.
Gaines took to social media to attack Trudeau’s policies which allow the CPU to have a gender self-identification trans-inclusion policy, which allows males to participate in women’s competitions based on gender alone.
“Justin Trudeau’s radical disdain for women (and reality) in effect,” she captioned her post, in which she referred to Andres as male.
“Andres’ record is a mediocre lift by a mediocre male powerlifter because the Canadian powerlifting union is discriminating against female athletes,” Gaines said.
“Being a woman or female athlete doesn’t mean we’re inferior or not capable of accomplishing incredible things, but it means we’re different from men,” the former University of Kentucky swimmer said.
“That’s exactly why the women’s sporting category was ever even created. And we deserve to be recognized and celebrated based off those physical ceilings and our own uniqueness.”
Conservative activist Charlie Kirk also sounded off.
“The result was a massacre. The second place finisher, an actual female, got a combined score across three lifts of 387 kilograms. ‘Anne’ the man beat her by more than 200 kg — more than 400 pounds!”
He continued: “This isn’t ‘equality’ or ‘fairness.’ It’s a sick joke to enable mentally ill cheaters to humiliate women.”
Canadian powerlifter April Hutchinson appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored and described Andres’ performance as “very disheartening.”
“For example, that national record that he broke — athletes have been chasing that for years,” she said. “And we’re talking top athletes who have been training, and training, and training.“
Hutchinson added: “A lot of women yesterday dropped out of the competition because they knew that Anne would be lifting. They dropped, they quit, they wrote to the federation, and the federation basically did nothing about it.”
But not enough women took a stand and withdrew from the competition, many on social media believed.
“Those two female finalists are just as disgusting for tolerating that, laughing with him, and being ‘awww shucks’ good sports about it,” one person sniped.
Another added: “The other women who compete against this bloke are part of the problem. Unite, refuse to compete, and the problem goes away.”
